We signed up for a tour on Monday afternoon and started at Genos East. Denise was our hostess! Thank you Denise! Unbeknownst to us, no one else signed up, so we had a private tour. We enjoyed Chicago deep dish pizza at Genos East--- cornmeal crust with unique flavor, sauce on top of slabs of cheese. Yummy! With a light snow greeting us on our walk, we stopped next at the Harold Washington Library-- a stately building with beautiful architecture and interior marble. We visited the third floor to see 58,300 dog tags for those who did not return from Vietnam. Very sobering. Next we stopped at Fannie May chocolates for mint meltaways. We did buy some extra chocolate bars for stocking stuffers. Next stop was the Italian Village--Al Capone's favorite restaurant. His private dining booth was next to the back exit. We enjoyed Italian Beef with au jus. I added the customary Giardiniera for extra spice. Hubby had Capone's favorite cocktail. On the way to our last stop we saw the Blues Brothers movie location. We ended at the Palmer Hotel for their famous brownie. We had personal attention all afternoon. We highly recommend this tour.
Our tour guide Denise was 1/2 hour late. When i called Viator to find out what was going on, they had no idea. Denise finally showed up for us to realize she had never ordered the pizza, so we waited until after 1 pm to get the pizza (waiting since 11:30 am) Then she told the waitress to cut the slices smaller so she could have some. She totally skipped two of our stops (the hot dog and bar) and ordered a drink for herself at one of the stops. This was the worse tour i have ever taken!
Truly honest review here. The tour was not what was advertised online. Sure, our tour guide was entertaining and we learned about some history from the sites we visited. However, there are truly only 3 food stops- deep dish, beef sandwiches, and a dessert. The portions were huge and nobody was hungry, but I have been on food tours all over the world and have never had so few tastes. I guess to me a food tour includes small samples of the best the City has to offer and this was not the case. The tour description depicts 5 food stops and other sightseeing locations that we never saw. You don't see the Picasso, you don't go through Millennium park, and you don't pass by the River Walk. It was a pleasant tour, but not what I expected and I am sure that there are better tours (food, city or both) out there.
Great fun tour. Denise was amazing and very knowledgeable but more importantly had a fun personality which really made the tour enjoyable. The top food choice was Ginos East deep dish pizza. Overall food choices were good. Maybe a Chicago dog in the mix would have been a good add. Love the tour and highly recommend it. Denise has nice Insight on the city and its history.
Denise was informative and took us to some great food places. We were never rushed and really enjoyed the stories and food. A yummy slice of pizza, then italian sandwiches, a candy sample, and ending with a yummy surprise finish.
